Blog

Going to vent a little bit today.

This morning I was waiting for some awesome clients to show up. They were running a little late, but the husband was the hero and lovingly encouraged the beautiful wife that they should get up and go to their training session. And lucky for the wife they made it, it was fantastic, if I do say so myself. They got to enjoy their customized workout, based on their personal goals. Now their legs and core are feeling blessed and they're closer to their goals :-). Anyway, I was waiting for them to show up and I saw a commercial about a...

Being Lean Is Habit

Key idea, people who are lean, are in the habit of being lean. They have been eating (practicing) being lean a long time. They didn’t get lean over night, just like I didn’t learn to play soccer overnight. When I was 10 we moved to Brazil and in Brazil soccer is a religion. I was terrible, straight up terrible, plus I was morbidly obese which didn’t help (I was 225 and 10 years old, I weigh less now). The way I saw it, I had two options. “Accept my fate,” or do something about it. I chose to take action and...

“People often say that motivation doesn’t last. Well, neither does bathing –  that’s why we recommend it daily.” Zig Ziglar

What gets you up and going? In your day to day life, what motivates you to show up at your job, to go work out, and eat right? It's one word, it's motivation. I think this quote from Zig Ziglar summarizes what I'm trying to say, “People often say that motivation doesn't last. Well, neither does bathing -  that's why we recommend it daily.” Besides being a funny quote, I think it shows some real value. So many people, including myself need motivation to get the tasks and even the things that we enjoy doing done. The other day, I trained a...

Man Swims Around The Entire UK (1,780 miles)!

So, how is this week’s challenge going? Are you eating and actually enjoying your food without distractions? As I said on Monday, if you slow down and really taste your food the chances of you actually enjoying it goes up a lot and you will naturally eat less. Now, a CRAZY story about a dude who battled through distractions. Let me introduce you to Ross Edgley, this guy decided to swim around the entire UK (1,780 miles) and it took him 5 months! His daily schedule included 12 hours of swimming a day and he had to eat 15,000 calories daily!...

Why People On The 56 Day Diet Get Frustrated!

I am sure you have heard a lot about the 56 day diet. Truth be told I am a fan, it is based on non-processed foods, it emphasizes protein, it is pretty epic. I have several clients who have done it and then came to me some who are currently trying it. Overall good stuff! Now the common frustration I hear from clients and others who have used it is… “I have stopped losing weight and I am doing exactly what it says”. In short, they get frustrated with the 56 day diet because they end up hitting a plateau and...

“If women lift weights they will get bulky and look like a dude or bodybuilder.”

Listen, I hear this all the time and it just isn’t true. For one, most women (unless on powerful hormones or are born with extremely odd genetics) do not have enough muscle building hormones in their bodies to build big bulking muscles. A typical male has 10 times the amount of hormones when compared to females. In short, women can’t really build dude muscles unless they are an anomaly. Second, for women to get “dude” muscle they would have to eat and train perfectly. What I mean by that is eating and training would have to be their live. 99% of the...

Weekly Challenge, Are You In?

Alright, this week’s challenge was inspired by own self imposed diet leading up to Christmas. I am only eating protein (meat) and produce (veggies). After 4 days I went from 230 to 221.8 and the magic is not in the meat and veggies. The magic is my calories are much lower. Why? Because, I cut out all the mainly empty carbs I was eating. Any way, that is not the point of this challenge. The challenge this week is to enjoy your food, yep you read that right! Often we eat as if this was the last time we would...

Could be suffering from Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD)

Well it's the fall, and that means cool breezes, lots of holiday preparation and celebrations, and depending on where you are, snow. This time of the year should be super awesome and exciting. However, for those who suffer from seasonal affective disorder (SAD) it can be a time where they struggle with depression and feelings of sadness. Instead of feeling joy and anticipation, they feel this sense of dread and sluggishness and often fear and/or dread being put in social settings (like at party). When SAD sets in, suffers report slowing “fall” into a depressive state. I'm not talking about the...

Amee lost 4 lbs over a long Weekend!

Today’s success story is all about Amee! But first some accountability regarding this week’s challenge. Have you reached out and contacted some old friends or family members? Reconnecting with old friends and family members helps keep you grounded and reminds you of your roots and how far you have come :-). How as your life changed since you last spoke with them? Are there things you miss and want to start doing again? Are you now grateful for things and experiences that hurt at the time but were fundamental to who you have become? Reflecting on the past can be...

You are shaped physically and mentally by what you consistently do.

The other day Axel took me on an “Adventure Walk” behind our house. As we were trespassing (Ironic I know) we ran into an old sign that was partly “consumed”  by the tree it was nailed to. I attached the picture so you can check it out. How long do you think it took for that sign to get consumed by the tree? 10 - 20 years? I have no idea, but I do know it did not happen overnight. It took a really long time.It took consistent work and effort. To often I see people quit just about the same...

Before you start training with weights you need to lose all the fat first…

Have you ever heard… “Before you start training with weights you need to lose all the fat first.” Unfortunately, I hear this myth often and it is beyond false!  It’s like saying you need to pay off all your debt before you get a job. Makes ZERO sense! So, why do people believe this? First, they are afraid of going to a gym and working out. They often don’t know what to do or how to do it. Plus, there will be a bunch of meatheads judging them the whole time. Second, they already feel bad about their appearance. Why would they...

Who Designs Your Training Plan?

I went to my first ever live musical at High Point University it was epic! Axel and Kenna, my kids were super excited and long story short we had a great time.   Now, I have a question for you. Would you let your 3 year old do their own makeup? I am guessing your answer is, “No!” First, what 3 year old wears makeup? Second, it would look like a 3 year old did their own make up...

In 2nd Grade I Weighed 225 lbs…

In life, it often seems more comfortable to try to avoid difficult situations. And here's the thing, we all know that difficult situations will come up. It's a part of life that is inevitable. And we have a choice, we can either take on the difficult situation or we can avoid it and flee from it. It should go without saying that avoiding or fleeing a difficult situation is rarely the right thing to do. I was a prime example of this in regards to my weight. You see, in 2nd grade I was 225 lbs, then I quite getting on...

8 Strategies To Avoid Weight Gain Over The Holidays

Today I will get straight to the point. Here are 8 ways to maintain or even lose weight over the Holidays. Don't miss workouts. This is the easiest way to maintain your current weight. I don't care what anybody else says. If you're consistently showing up and working hard you'll burn an extra for 300 to 400 calories per hour, if not more, I'm being conservative. Plus, the chances are you're going to overeat, what better way to burn off some of those extra calories by performing a hard workout. Keep a food log. Yes, I love keeping a food...
