Will Diet Soda Make You Fat?

Well this weekend I experienced the circle of life “Live!”

My family and I went to Hanes Park and had a picnic. While we were there a squirrel got curious and came in to see what was up. My daughter Kenna fed it some bread and the whole experience was pretty neat, but then…things took an unexpected turn.

The squirrel made a couple loud noises and then run up a tree really fast, it even left a piece of bread behind. Weird we thought!?  Well the kids went back to eating and playing. About 5 minutes had passed and we heard some branches crashing, we looked up just in time to see a hawk carrying away our little squirrel friend. 🙁

Crazy right!?

This made me thing about some of the dumb things we fight about in the fitness industry. A classic example is Diet Soda or diet beverages in general. Will they make you fat? Do they help you lose weight?

The answer is…Yes…to both questions…lol. I am going to give you a few quick reasons why.

First, you need to understand that most Diet Sodas and beverages contains absolutely 0 nutritional value.

Second, “Can diet beverages cause weight gain?” From a scientific standpoint the short answer is…NO! Zero calories means zero weight gain. However, some Zero calorie, diet beverages actually contain some calories, but since it is less than 1% of the total ingredients it can be branded as Zero calories.

Third, “Can drinking diet beverages cause you to gain weight?” Yes, lol…When most people drink a diet beverage it triggers cravings. Which often causes an increase in appetite, which can lead to overeating. And as I always say, when you eat more calories than you body needs you will gain weight.

Fourth, bonus, drinking diet beverages can also cause a false sense of security…You know, the “I just saved 140 calories because I drank a diet soda…I can have Nachos, I earned it.” While drinking a diet soda is better than drinking calories, it is not a free pass to eat extra calories.

Fifth, my thoughts! I recommend you drink mainly water and limit the fake stuff to a minimum ;-). I personally have 1 calorie free soda a day.

Go be awesome!
