Six things that determine how many calories your body needs to lose fat!

So…what do you need to do less of? For me, I need to do less reading and writing I think. I know, seems crazy, but I think I spend to much time doing it so I spend less time with my amazing wife and kiddos.

So, this week I am sticking to my planned working slots. If it doesn’t get done, it doesn’t get done.

I won’t lie, just typing that makes me fearful. But fear is best dealt with by facing it head on.

Any way, that being said, below are the six things that determine how many calories your body needs to lose fat, they are….

  1. Age
  2. Weight
  3. Gender
  4. Lean Body Mass
  5. Base Metabolic Rate
  6. Activity Level

Age, as you age, your metabolism slows down. Thus, the amount you need to eat to maintain life goes down…However, if you exercise with weights and your nutrition is on point you can prevent and even reverse this trend ;-).

Weight, the bigger you are, the more calories your body will need. If you are small framed you won’t require as much as someone who has a larger frame. Not fair, but it is what it is. Basically the more muscle you have the more calories you need. Sidenote, fat doesn’t burn calories, muscle does, that is why you want to exercise with weights ;-).

Gender, this kind of relates to the above. Men, generally speaking, have more muscle and thus burn more calories and can eat more food without gaining weight. This has caused tension and gender wars for years lol ;-). Don’t shoot the messenger ;-).

Lean Body Mass, you need to know how much lean body mass (mainly muscle) you have. The more you have the more calories you will need. For example, if you 200 pounds and your lean body mass is 150 lbs, you will need less calories than someone who is 200 pounds and has a lean body mass of 180 lbs. Once again, more muscle = burning more calories.

Base Metabolic Rate, is a fancy term for the number of calories your body burns every day to sustain life. Your base metabolic rate does NOT include energy used for exercise. Also, the higher your base metabolic rate it, the higher your lean body mass is 9 times out of 10. I hope you see the trend.

If you want to burn a lot calories, you need more muscle ;-).

Go be awesome!
