Six-Time Olympic Champions Cow Workout

Milo of Croton

The other day I was talking with some clients about Milo of Croton and I asked if they had ever heard of him. They said no, they had no idea what I was talking about. Then one of the lovely ladies suggested that I should probably write an email about it to educate you all on a cool story and a simple concept that is often overlooked. So here we go.

The story, as I remember it goes something like this. In ancient Greece there was this kid and he was a phenomenal wrestler. So good in fact, that he won the Olympic Wrestling Championship in the Boy’s division Circa 540 BC and then went to win 6 more times in the Men’s division. Yes, I know, that was a long time ago. Anyway, he was known for beating his opponents by bear hugging them to the point of submission and then pinning them. As you might have guessed, everyone began asking Milo how he got to be so strong. This was Milo’s simple, but effective program….

Lift a Calf and Carry it around daily.

Basically, Milo would go, lift a calf and carry it around for awhile. Day in and day out Milo would show up, pick up the calf and simply walk around. And as nature does its thing, the calf started to grow bigger and bigger and bigger. Soon enough this calf wasn’t a calf any more, it was a full blown COW…and faithful Milo kept showing up, putting in the work carrying around a huge cow. Needless to say, over the progression of time, in a linear fashion Milo become pretty strong. Why? Because he simply grew and got stronger as the calf grew and got bigger.

Is this is a myth, fable, or true story?

Okay, truthfully I don’t think this whole story is 100% accurate. However, I think it’s a great story. The principles carry over into lifting and exercise in general. I call it, “time under tension.” The longer you consistently put in work, the longer you are under “tension.” That means lifting heavier weights and progressively getting stronger and more aesthetically pleasing as you firm up and lose body fat over time.

And it really is almost as simple as Milo’s experience with the cow. Start small, work up to heavier weights progressively over time. As you do that, the results will come. They have to, there’s no other response your body can do, but to grow more muscle, which is going to burn more calories, which is going to burn more fat and the rest just happens.

Now yes, if you want to speed up the process and you want to lose a lot of weight quickly then nutrition comes into play (Need the JUF Fat-loss guide?) and other things, but in the most simplest fashion. Start slow, work your way up, become stronger to gain more balance and to make your life easier, not to mention look and feel better.

Milo was also known for bursting a head band with his forehead by simply inflating the veins of his temples! I found that pretty crazy, also supposedly Milo died when he tried to tear apart a tree with his hands. Unfortunately, he got stuck in the tree and a pack of wolves then surprised him and ate him. You didn’t really need to know this last paragraph but I found it interesting so I threw it in there 🙂

Have a great weekend! I’m going to the Panthers game, I’m going to be awesome because the Panthers are going to be awesome and the beat the stinking Falcons : ).
