The “Best” Recipe For A Pancake

This week we went to church at Mercy Hill and Pastor Andrew told a story about making pancakes.  I thought the story was pretty funny and I think it relates well to the fitness world.

This is the story.

Pastor Andrew wanted to create tradition in his family. So he talked with his wife and the tradition is going to be making a pancake breakfast on Saturday mornings. I think that is a great idea, cuz let’s face it, pancakes are pretty simple the recipe is simple, mixing the batter is simple. In my, opinion it’s a genius idea.

Now, according to Pastor Andrew he is a terrible cook. But lucky for him, his wife is a fantastic.

On Saturday, he wakes up and she already has everything laid out and planned for, literally all he has to do is follow the instructions and pancakes are minutes away.

As Andrew put it, he grabs the packet of Bisquick to read the directions. He’s reading through them and he comes to a part that is all scratched out, so he can barely read it.

Instead of ignoring it and moving on he decided to try and decipher what his wife had scratch off. Long story short she scratched out the part where you add sugar into the pancakes….

Now Pastor Andrew decided this is his chance, his one chance to be known for something great in the kitchen for his family. So he puts a cup of sugar into his pancakes : ). His kids then brag about how great his pancakes are. All he had to do was add sugar.

If the mission is to make great pancakes, the process is following a great recipe.

In the same way, if the mission is for you to look fit and fabulous, the process is you need a customized exercise plan for just you.

You don’t want a cookie cutter plan, that’s designed for quote on quote everyone. You don’t want to follow a plan that’s designed for the majority of people. You need a plan that’s designed specifically for you, to get you from point A to point B.

How many times in regards to nutrition have you heard, “This is the only way to do it.” or “you have to do it like this. You have to go low carb, you have to count your calories, you have to eat 6 meals a day, you have to eat 3 meals a day. etc”  

Here’s the thing, all of those things will work and will work well. The problem is most of the time the people who are selling you these items are trying to place you inside of their system, they’re not creating a system designed for just you.

In short, their mission is to sell their system, you’re the process to make them money.

Where I think it should be vice a versa. The mission is you, to make you feel fit and fabulous, and the process is a customized fitness program.

I have some clients who are madly successful on a low-carb diet. Other clients are crazy busy they need a simple easy habit focused process. Like eat 3 meals a day until they’re satisfied and no snacking. Other clients do great when they log their calories and stay under a certain number.

The point is everyone is different, and what will work for some people won’t work for others. That’s why a generic plan that is designed for everyone rarely works. You’re unique and you’re an individual, plus, I would argue you need a unique customized design fitness plan that was built for just you.
