My Wife Didn’t Even Notice My New Rack :-(

Has This Ever Happened To You?

The other day, I had a client who generously gave me a squat rack, for those who don’t know what a squat rack is, when you come into my studio, it’s the big black thing that you do pull ups on or TRX pull-ups and sometimes maybe even do squats on. Anyway, this awesome client had a spare squat rack that they didn’t use, so they brought it to me. To give you some context, this squat rack has a 4 X 4 foot footprint and is about 7 ft tall. Needless to say it’s pretty big.

As you might have guessed, I was super excited about this. I wanted to show off my new rack that this client had given me. So, what do you think I did? I ran inside and got my loving and supportive wife Beth. I said, “Hey, I gotta show you something.” She came into the studio looked around and said, “That is lovely.” then started telling me some story that I don’t even remember because I my news was more important : ). Anyway I interrupted her story and asked,  “Notice anything different?” She looked around again and then started telling me whatever story she was supposed to be telling me that apparently was more important than mine :-). Feeling defeated  and a little antsy I was like, “Look at this!” and she goes, “This is new?” I yelled, “YES! Are you kidding me? It’s only 7 feet tall.”

This was when I rolled my eyes, and thought to myself this is what it must feel like when someone loses a lot of weight, when you change your haircolor, get a new haircut, or simply change something and nobody notices. The whole point of changing the way you look is so that people will notice it in a positive manner.

Side note, I should follow my own advise and listen to what Beth’s story, learning and moving on…

What has this got to do with you?

The moral of this short story is we need to notice others. So often were so intrinsically focused on Me, Myself, and I, that we don’t even notice other people’s “racks”, or changes.  I know I can be to inwardly focused, and I’m sure you can relate to this. We’re so focused on us, what we’re doing, what’s happening to us, that we forget to look at others and notice them. I’m sure there’s someone in your office, I’m sure there’s someone at your child’s school, or  I’m sure there’s somebody in your neighborhood. The point is, there is someone in your sphere of influence that needs to be noticed. There’s somebody that you could encourage and say, “Hey, nice shoes.” or  “It seems like you’ve lost some weight.” Just say something positive about them.

Think about it, when was the last time you received a compliment and got offended? My guess is never. So, why do we want to withhold our compliments from others? I don’t know and I really don’t have the time to do the research currently, but for some reason there’s something inside us that is holding us back from complimenting and encouraging others.

In Closing…

Even though my wife didn’t notice my new rack.

I want you to notice others and encourage them to the best of your ability and inspire them to do and be more. You were created to be awesome.

Now go be awesome 🙂
