Protein Bars…Friend of Foe!?

Well it has been 2 days since the Holiday weekend…have you lost that bit of weight you gained over the long weekend? Or maybe you didn’t gain anything? Perhaps you even lost?

I know, wishful thinking lol. Unfortunately, chances are that you gained weight simply because you ate more treats then you are used to. I know I did, I had pizza at a friends house, plus I then had ice cream (I love both of these foods so much!!! It’s a shame they are so calorie dense).

Speaking of treats, today we are going to discuss Protein bars, are the friend of foe?

In my experience coaching and training clients, there are basically two ways people view protein bars. They either see them as a “healthy” tasty sweet treat with added nutrients or as a dense source of generally processed calories that aren’t nearly as filling as whole foods.

Which are you?

If you view protein bars as an treat, meaning you think they taste great beware! Protein bars are normally super calorie dense (300 to 500 calories!).  Plus, if you eat them for pleasure chances are you will eat one even if you are not hungry, which is less than ideal. You are just adding in extra calories.

On the other hand, if you view protein bars as a necessary evil to get your macros in also beware.  After you force yourself to eat that nasty piece of calk you may feel deprived. After all you just paid $3.00 to $5.00 dollars for that thing and the Snickers right beside it has half as many calories and is only a $1.00.

Another danger is you end up feeling virtuous or “holier than thou” and justify eating an extra portion of pizza or pasta because earlier you sacrificed with a protein bar.  In this same vein, rarely is replacing a protein bar for dessert a good idea. Most of the time you end of feeling deprived and then binge eat your favorite treat any way.

The takeaway, beware of why you eat and or rely on protein bars. Better yet, don’t touch them and just eat whole unprocessed food. Try Just 4 You Meals, it is easy, fast, and no clean up…plus it tastes great and helps you drop weight.
