Do You Workout Too Much?

Good morning and HAPPY FRIDAY!

Vacation season is in full swing, I should know, I just got back from vacation 2 weeks ago : ).

Here’s the thing, whether you are traveling to the mountains or the beach, it’s the time of year when most people have or are planning a much needed break from the daily grind.

You might be surprised to hear me say this…but to become fit, healthy, and happy you need to take some breaks.

If you try and operate at 100%, 100% of the time you will burn out.

Case in point, the other day the family and I went out to eat with some close friends…who I also train…and revenge will be mine…you know who you are…

Any way, this couple shared one of their favorite eating spots and it was epic…almost too epic.

My plan was I would eat half of whatever I ordered. I did great…until I was challenged with a piece of cake the size of my head. They said there was no way I could eat the whole thing.

I am both sad and happy to annouce, I was in fact able to eat the whole slice ;-)!

Yes, I caved…and ate the whole thing. Eating that whole cake, pretty much set me back a whole week in my diet…but it was fun hanging out with friends and enjoying some R & R.

To reach your goals, you need balance: both hard work and some R & R.

Now, you and I can’t eat like pigs and do nothing all day and expect to get results, but taking a break every now and then is good.

With that here are some dangers of overtraining.

First, Burn Out! If you workout too much and never take a break you will eventually burn out. Burn out leads to lack of motivation. When you lack motivation you quit and when you quit, you end up back at your starting point. Don’t quite! Regardless of how bad you slip!

Second, when you overtrain and don’t take breaks your chances of injury go up. When you practice resistance training you create micro tears in your muscles. Over the course of 8 – 12 weeks that is ok, your body rebuilds them and you get bigger and healthier muscles…but if you don’t take a little siesta your body has a hard time keeping up. So…don’t feel bad if you take a week break every 8 – 12 weeks ;-)!

Third, when you are overtraining you get tired easily and simply feel fatigued 24/7. And when you do workout, you are get weaker, not stronger. Often times you even become less productive in all aspects of your life. So, listen to your body.

Well that is all for today! I hope you all have a great Friday!

Go be awesome!
