When did doing the right thing, become the dumb thing?

Okay, so quick story, bare with me. On Saturday, I accidently washed my cell phone in the washer…: (. Dumb move. I immediately took out the battery, did what everyone else recommends and put it in a bag full of dry rice. On Sunday, I took the phone to a repair place not expecting much. $35.00 dollars later, the good news, my phone would turn on but the touch screen is screwed up to the point that it won’t function like it should, bad news.

So I took the phone to T-Mobile and fully disclosed what occurred. I had three options. First, I could keep the phone and payments and just add a line. No! Second, I could add insurance wait thirty days and then bring in my “newly” damaged phone. Third, I could pay for the damaged phone and then get a new one, total $950.00.

I hope and pray most you reading this will see that really there were only two options. I cannot believe, the second “option” was even offered. Basically, I was told to buy insurance as if my phone was perfectly in order and then wait 30 days, come back to the store and pay a deductible of $175.00 and get a new phone. I won’t lie, my little head was really turning trying to justify fraud, lying, and stealing.

Lucky for me, I had flash backs from having an unbelievably godly father and I said no to all three options.

I then drove to a different T-Mobile store to carry out option three, yep pay the total of $950.00. I didn’t want to support a store that would behave in such a dishonest and unethical fashion.
However, much to my surprise. The other store not only offered me the same options. The salesmen even tried to stop me saying, “Dude, everyone does it. We do it every day!” Are you kidding me people? I then asked him the same question I asked the first salesman, “So you are telling me I should just lie?” He said, and I quote, “It’s really not lying…because everyone does it. The insurance company is the only one that will suffer.”

Are you flipping kidding me!

Anyway, I was sick to my stomach because I was going to pay a boat load for my dumb mistake and because being honest is apparently frowned upon at T-Mobile and for society at large. Not only that, but they made me feel dumb for being honest. They were trying to use peer pressure to get me to commit fraud. Granted, they were young college age kids who were trying to save me money. Heart in the right place, check. Moral and ethics, left wanting.

This leads me back to the title, “When did doing the right thing, become the dumb thing?” If you know, comment below. If you think, I am dumb for not taking the “deal” comment below with why.

In conclusion, life is not easy, training is not easy, watching what you eat is not easy, being truthful is not easy. There are numerous shortcuts one can take, both in fitness and in life. But they only lead to self-destruction. Regardless, when I open the doors to my new personal training studio in Winston-Salem, NC there will be no short cuts. I won’t compromise my clients experience and results for a cheaper more “affordable” option.

Take aways: Be honest!
