Pulling up flooring and accountability.

As you probably know, we purchased a house last week and it needs some TLC. So, on Saturday I was “blessed” with the opportunity pull up all the flooring and tiles in the basement. It was kind of the pits…ok, it was really the pits.

Starting a new project, much like starting anything new is hard and causes some anxiety and stress. Think about the last time you tried to diet or start a workout plan, it was probably tough going. Lucky for me, I have three layers of accountability so I can’t help but get my desired outcome.

First, I have my amazing wife Beth! Beth is hyper focused and is a detail wizard. She has researched everything that needs to be done, created a spreadsheet, listed the cost of each project, etc… In short, she has already thought of everything that needs to be done to get the house where she envisions it. That saves me a lot of time, mental energy, and anxiety. I don’t have to worry about what to do. I simply ask my “Boss” or “Trainer” what’s next and she tells me. As a result, I get more accomplished in less time because she has already researched and thought through everything. All I need to do is follow directions and put in the work and goals are guaranteed.

Second, Beth has an amazing Mom (Amy) and Dad (Artie) who also provide accountability. While Beth and I were at the house her mom was willing to watch the kids for hours (no small matter) my oldest is 3.5 and my youngest is almost 2. They are basically wide open. Any way, because Amy is willing to sacrifice her personal time to help watch the kids this frees Beth and I up to work on the house and accomplish our goals. In short, Amy eliminates excuses for staying at home and doing nothing. This also makes use value our time more, because if we waste our time, we are wasting hers. Positive peer pressure…she also brought food!

Third, Artie, he is a man of many talents, one of which is work ethic. I have worked beside him numerous times and he always is going 100%, as a result those around him give 100%. On Saturday, not only did Artie install a new facet fixture, when he finished he came downstairs and helped me pull up tiles. By having Artie present with me, I was able to get more done in less time simply by the fact that I had somebody to push me and make the experience more enjoyable…yes, Artie is funny and has a great sense of humor…just don’t tell him that : ).

Takeaways: Accountability helps and gets you results.

1. Find someone to help you reach your goals. You are never more invested into something then when you invest in it…money and time.
2. Find someone to eliminate your common excuses.
3. Find someone who makes the experience more enjoyable.

Now go and be awesome!
