Do you ever feel overwhelmed?

I know I do : )

Take today for example. I have a list of items that I need to get done and I’m struggling to get the momentum to start. But I know, from my past experience, once I start I’ll crack through it, and will be done in 2 to 3 hours. The hardest part is getting started. You’ll hear me say this again and again. The reason being is…is because it’s so true.

Before we start something, we think about it.

As we learned yesterday, most of the time our thoughts (remember the Mind Monkey) dwell on the negative. So instead of thinking and dwelling on how smoothly and how great everything will go.  We instead choose to focus on how hard it will be, how difficult it will be, how time-consuming it will be, the list could go on and on. This is why most people stop exercising before they even start. They let the, “what ifs” stop them.

But the truth of the matter is, once we get started, most of the time none of those bad things happen. And if something bad does happen, it’s not nearly as bad as we had envisioned.

Can you relate to this in your own life?

Here are some of my personal tips and tricks that I use to get my daily tasks done and kill the “Overwhelming Bug.”

  1. I create a list of items that I need to do the night before. Generally, I do this right before I go to bed.  This takes me anywhere from 5 to 10 minutes tops. But in doing so it’ll give me a game plan for tomorrow, and I know if I follow the game plan I’ll get it done.
  2. I rank the items on the list in order of priority. The top three things, are the main things I need to get done the following day. The other items are bonuses. If I get those done its just extra awesome and…If I don’t get those things done, I’m not going to freak out and dwell on it….or at least not much 🙂
  3. I put all of my appointments, tasks, do-tos, in Google Calendar and schedule them in.  Google Calendar is literally a lifesaver for me :-).  For example a year ago, I put in that I needed to renew my annual yearly report for the State on the 10th of February. If I hadn’t have done that, I would have forgotten to do so, and ended up in a world of hurt this fiscal year.

Those are just three things that I personally do on a day-to-day basis that help me beat down the feeling of being overwhelmed and paralyzed. Generally, when we get overwhelmed it’s because we don’t have a plan and we’re just bouncing from thing to thing or we are allowing the fear of the unknown stop us. But if we have a plan and we know what needs to get done and what needs to get done first, it makes it a lot easier to act and gain momentum.

Once again, the hardest part is getting started, once we get started things generally just flow into one thing and unto the next.

Go be awesome!
