More isn’t better.

Today I am going to be busting the idea you need to spend hours a day working out to get results. So often we think more is better and that is not the case.

Trust me, I made this mistake. This is a flawed idea and it goes right at the root of humanity. What I mean, is we as humans always think for whatever reason more is better. We think if we spend two hours in the gym, we will get twice as good as results if we normally go for an hour. Or we think 30 minutes is just a waste of time. “I mean who can really get a good workout in 30 minutes?” Actually, 98% of my clients only work out for 30 minutes at any given time and they get phenomenal results.

Regardless, I made the classic, “More is better mistake”, when I was 13 and started working out in Brazil. My parents got me the best Christmas gift ever. A barbell and about 160 lb of weights. I would work out for an hour and a half to two hours every single day, doing the exact same exercises over and over again. And guess what? I got weaker. Why? Because I was overdoing it! Essentially my body was never recovering. It was always in a state of repair, it was never getting a chance to recover. If your body isn’t allowed to adapt from the stimulus you place it under, it won’t change, it won’t adapt, and you will watch your muscles just fade away. Not good.

To illustrate what I mean I will tell you a quick story about Axel’s, my son’s, third Taekwondo class. How long do you think Axel’s classes are? He is 5. They are only 30 minutes. These instructors know, from experience if they make a kid that young do Taekwondo for more than 30 minutes they will get bored and restless. But!! At 30 minutes Axel is still into it and wants more. That is the perfect way to leave my son and your body. It feels like it got a good workout, but it is still excited for tomorrow.

Okay, so this is a little bit longer than I anticipated :-). I got to go take care of my children. Once again don’t over do it.

Go be awesome.
