Do you procrastinate in almost all aspects of your life?

If so, you need to take part in this weeks challenge, which is based on the book by Mel Robbins called, “The 5 Second Rule.”

Disclaimer, I have not read this book back to back, the part I keep reviewing is about how to beat hesitation and as a result beat procrastination. If you don’t have time to read…or you will just procrastinate lol…check out the audio book, that is what I am doing.

Any way, the 5 second rule will help you overcome fear and take action.

Here is how it works, paraphrasing the author: “The moment you have an instinct to act on something (ANYTHING)….. count backwards from 5 (5, 4, 3, 2, 1)  and then PHYSICALLY do something to act on that instinct!”

The idea and research behind the 5 second rule shows that this habit “fools” our brain and helps to prevent us from limiting ourselves. In short, it teaches us to trust our instincts.

For example: Let’s pretend you are at a restaurant and in walks your favorite movie star or athlete (like Arnold, The Terminator) :-). In this scenario, Arnold is alone and is sitting waiting to be seated. You are just dying to meet him and tell him how much you love his movies, articles, books, etc….

As you get more excited your brain says… “Hmmm, you really want to go bug him? You know people probably annoy him on day to day basis. Do you want to be one of those people? He just wants to be alone with some peace and quiet.”

Then he checks his phone and leaves…you just lost your chance ;-(. Which really sticks!

Now, let’s go back in time and use the 5 second rule.

You see The Terminator enter, your impulse is to go meet him, you then count from 5 back down to 1 and take some sort of physical action. In this case you choose to walk towards him. As you do so, you make eye contact and he says, “Hi.” In the end, you get a selfie and an autograph :-).

The main point is you can do this whenever fear, procrastination, or hesitation starts to take hold of you.

Feel like you should workout? 5-4-3-2-1 go put on your workout clothes. Had a thought about meal prep? 5-4-3-2-1 go prep your week worth of meals. See warm chocolate chip cookies on your counter? 5-4-3-2-1 go push your kids out of the way so you can eat them first…ok, don’t do that one lol. I think you get the point.

Who is in for the 5 second rule challenge? Let me know ;-).

Go be awesome!
