Try this Weeks Challenge: Eat PREbiotics to strengthen your PRObiotics

As you may recall in January, I talked about PRObiotics and how important they were for your overall health. They help with your digestion, but they also play a key role in dozens of other bodily functions.

As you may recall, PRObiotics are good microorganisms that live inside your gut,  they are basically little creatures that run about inside you. Don’t freak out : ). No, these are not evil parasites looking to consume your brain and take over your body. PRObiotics live inside your gut and help you live a better life.

You need to feed your probiotics, just like you feed yourself :-).

For PRObiotics to live a long healthy life, You need to feed them right. Yes, I understand this is kind of weird :-).

Now we’re going to talk about PREbiotics.  The PRObiotics food…

PREbiotics are non-digestible fiber. When you think of probiotics think of onion and artichokes just to name a few. These non-digestible forms of fiber are great sources of fuel for those tiny microorganisms that we call PRObiotics and live inside us.

Here’s a quick list of foods that are high in PREbiotics.

  • Asparagus
  • Garlic
  • Onions
  • Raw Chicory Root (I had to Google this…avoid if pregnant)
  • Raw Jerusalem Artichoke

If you’d like to know more click this link   www.draxe.com/prebiotics  .

Your mission this week is to add more PREbiotics to your diet. if you already consume enough PREbiotics your  challenge this week is to try a new one :-).

If you’d like more info on PRObiotics read below from an old post.

So, I had to dig a little bit for this week’s challenge.

And what I’ve decided is that we’re going to eat or drink something with probiotic in it everyday :-). I know, I am super excited too, but it’s good for us : ).

If you’ve been following the news there is a buzz lately regarding the importance and benefits of probiotics and how they promote gut health.

The buzzword is actually, “gut microbiome.”

The fancy word refers to the benefits of microorganisms, bacteria, that live inside of us and help us digest food as well as keep our immune system strong and healthy.

The health experts claim that having just the right balance of probiotics can make a significant difference in our overall health. And who doesn’t want to be more healthy?

In better news, you don’t have to rely on a supplements.

There are a whole bunch of natural ways that you can consume your probiotics that will help fight off the bad bacteria inside your gut.

What’s also interesting, is that in many parts of the world probiotics are kind of old news. It’s been a part of many countries regular diet for years, if not centuries. Some examples are Kiefer,  kimchi, and yogurt.

What’s funny is when I lived in Korea for a year when I taught English right after college. I was introduced to kimchi there. I don’t like it at all the first couple times I tried it. But after about 3 to 4 months…I got kind of addicted to it :-). When in Rome I guess :-).

Here are some other Foods that have good probiotics in them.

  • Pickles
  • Miso
  • Greek Yogurt
  • Sauerkraut
  • Kombucha – A lot of people love this, I do not.
  • Kimchi
  • Green Olives

So the question becomes, are you up for eating at least one pro probiotic food each and every day this week? I hope so :-), because really, you can eat at least a pickle or green olive right?
