Did you know Daylight Savings Time Can Help You Lose Weight?

I Hate Daylight Savings Time…Does That Sound Like You Too?

As many of you know, or at least I hope most of you know :-), this Sunday we change our clocks because of daylight savings time. Most everyone in the United States will move their clocks forward one hour, which results in more Daylight at the end of each and every day.

If you are like most people, this spring forward tradition comes with a touch of dread and agony. it basically means we get one less hour of sleep :-(. However, you can take advantage of this time change and use it to empower you to improve your fitness levels, general health, and better yet, help you lose weight :-).

Oh…The POWER of daylight!

Sunlight is an essential part of  of our existence.

There are two hormones that control both our mood and our energy and they are called serotonin and melatonin. Serotonin boost our mood and our energy levels.  Melatonin on the other hand allows us to feel sleepy. If you have too much melatonin in your system it can even lead to feelings of depression. Maybe you even recall me mentioning winter depression or is a common disorder that a lot of people suffer through during, “The Long Dark” wintry months. A lot of times this is often directly tied to a lack of daylight, which results in too little serotonin and too much melatonin.

In short, when there is a lot of sunlight you produce more serotonin and less melatonin, this covers in late spring and in the summer. The flip side of that is during the fall and winter when there is less sunlight, you will produce less serotonin and more melatonin. When these changes occur it can dramatically affect your overall feeling of well-being and it will affect your energy levels. Which can explain why it is common for people to feel like they have more energy and more motivation when the days are longer, like in the spring and in the summer.

Use This New Found Sunlight To Make You A Fat Burning Machine : )

Has it been hard to work out this winter? Has your motivation been a little weak over these long dark days?

If so, one of the reasons might because you aren’t getting enough sunlight. If you didn’t go into the fall and winter months with an ingrained exercise habit and plan, your lack of serotonin coupled with to much melatonin could be the reason you lost your motivation and spent most of these last winter months thinking about and wishing you had been working out and losing weight.

Because truthfully, long-term  weight loss and being fit is the result of having a exercise plan and sticking with it in the long-term. You need to develop an exercise habit that just becomes a part of your day-to-day life and who you are. This doesn’t mean you have to workout everyday, but it does mean that now would be the perfect time to start building healthy exercise habits :-).

I want you to take full advantage of these longer days and increased sunlight!

After all, the increase serotonin is going to boost your mood and your energy, which should give you more motivation to stick to your exercise plan…assuming you have one : ).
