If losing weight is your goal, DON’T STOP exercising with Weights

Why do I say that?

If you don’t lift weights your muscles will shrink.

At first that doesn’t necessarily sound like a bad thing…but it definitely is. If you are 25 or older, and some cases just 20 years old, you were totally losing muscle as we speak…unless you are exercising with weights in an effort to build muscle and maintain it.

At around the age of 20 to 25 we naturally start to lose muscle mass every decade.

And the old cliche, “if you don’t use it, you lose it.” could not apply more. Ever wonder why you eat the same amount that you used to back in high school, but you’re gaining weight now?

It’s because your metabolism is slower. Do you know one of the main reasons your metabolism has slowed down is because you have less muscle?

True story, your muscles are calorie burning machines and the more muscle you have the more calories you will burn. When you where in high school those double stuffed Oreo’s didn’t seem to hurt you to much. But now…now you just look at one and gain weight. Why, because you have less muscle mass then you once did and your metabolism is slower. As a result, all those extra calories are going straight to your stomach, hips, legs, I think you get the point, as FAT :-(.

No one wants that!

If that doesn’t sink through how about this?

Have you ever broken your arm or leg? And you didn’t use it for weeks on end? Then, when you finally got the cast taken off what did your arm or leg look like? Was it all shriveled up small and weak? The goods news (j/k) is you lost weight…a lot of it. But it was mostly muscle. Do you really want that it happen all over your body? I doubt it, but that is basically the same thing that happens to you slowly once you start to age past the age of 20 – 25.

So in essence, Unless you’re exercising with weights your body is in a cast and it’s slowly getting losing more and more muscle, which is making you gain more and more fat and getting weaker, frailer, and fatter. I’m pretty sure no one wants that.

Still not convinced? Here’s a list of just a few of the benefits of weight training:

  • Creates up to 22% more afterburn than aerobic exercise alone. (Afterburner refers to the  amount of calories your body will burn even hours after you’ve worked out.)
  • It helps protect you from falls. If you exercise with weights your bones become a little bit more dense, your muscles stay strong and your balance will improve which greatly reduce your risk of injuring yourself from falling.
  • As I mentioned earlier, it raises your energy level. The more muscle you have the easier life is and the less effort you have to exert when going about your day-to-day life.
  • It helps prevent you from looking “skinny fat” like your casted arm or leg.
  • It improves your aerobic threshold. Stronger muscles equal better endurance.
  • It increases your metabolism.
  • It makes your heart stronger, which reduces blood pressure.
  • It helps you burn calories even when you’re resting. Remember more muscle equals more calories burning.
  • Gives you a sculpted look, instead of a chicken nugget look.
  • Prevents muscle loss.

I hope I have convinced you that you NEED to exercise with weights. You don’t need to go crazy, most people can get away with just two, 30 minute strength training sessions a week.
