I have a confession to make….

I LOVE Salt!

I love putting salt on food. Plus, growing up in Brazil didn’t help. That being said, I really do need to cut back on the amount I take in. Have you ever documented how much salt you take in day? I did and it was scary enough that it inspired this Weeks CHALLENGE ;-).

Plus, if you eat a lot of processed premade food this is going to tough for you to.

These are just a few reasons why you should monitor your salt intake. If you consume to much your body will store more water which…I didn’t know this…raises your blood pressure, the silent killer. In short, your heart, arteries, kidneys, and brain will be put under greater strain.

Since most of us get to much salt this week’s challenge is to cut your salt intake back to 2,300 mg. I got this number from the American Heart Association, they recommend 1,500 mg a day ideally, but no more than 2,300 mg. Most of us blow through that number before lunch, so I am going to take the higher of the two…baby stepping it.

To give you idea of how much salt 2,300 mg looks like check this out.

  • ¼ teaspoon salt = 575 mg sodium
  • ½ teaspoon salt = 1,150 mg sodium
  • ¾ teaspoon salt = 1,725 mg sodium
  • 1 teaspoon salt = 2,300 mg sodium

Now…if you eat a lot of processed foods…this challenge is going to be really hard. There are some guidelines:

  • You must read the labels – most condiments (even hot sauce for Pete’s Sake (yep, that was pun 😉 have lots of sodium.
  • Keep a log of how much sodium you are in-taking, if you use myfitnesspal it does it for you.
  • You can also replace traditional salt with Pink Himalayan Salt…if you are feeling salting…lol. This is an article that speaks to the benefits of Pink Himalayan Salt if you are interested, click here.

Are up to reducing your salt? Let me know 😉

KELLEN LAKE – This going to personally suck…

PS – Who is going to suffer with me and improve our heart health?
