Fat Is Like A Stray Dog

Fat is like a stray dog!

It’s Friday! Congrats, you survived another week and I hope you are just a little bit leaner than you were before the start.

Have you ever had a stray dog that just wouldn’t go away? I remember when I was about 12, we lived in Brazil and we had this stray dog that would not go away. I love dogs, I think they are awesome, and I felt bad for this one. So did I do? I fed it. Do you think the dog left? No, it didn’t, because it was getting food. The same is true for fat. If you keep feeding it, it won’t go away either.

I keep saying this, but it is still true. Losing fat is all about the Quantity and Quality of the food you consume, generally in that order. That is the “big” secret. Once you have the right quantity and then slowly improve your quality your body fat has no choice but to pack up its bags and leave town.

It really is that simple…at least from a biological standpoint. Psychologically, it is a lot tougher. Which is why a habit based, slow, small changes over an extended amount of time make the biggest impact.

What You Can Do About!

If you have more fat on your body than you want, you need to look at how you are maintaining it. What are you doing/eating to maintain it? The way you find this out is simple. Start documenting what you are eating.

This is where a food log is extremely helpful because it tells you the QUANTITY of food you are consuming. You then can look back and say, “Ok, I ate 1 bagels and 2 eggs for breakfast every day. I am able to cut that bagel into half.” Doesn’t sound like much but over the course of a week you will save about 1,050 calories. Which is about a 2 hour fast jog and all you did was eat a little bit less for one meal.

Once you stop losing weight over a 2-3 week period and you have established this new habit look at your food log and pick something else to improve upon. I advise looking at lunch. It is important to note you are only focusing on the Quantity of food consumed at this point.

Fast forward 3 – 6 months, you are down about 15% – 30% of your starting weight. Now you start improving the Quality of food you are consuming. Instead of sausage you substitute turkey sausage, instead of pasta, you substitute quinoa or brown rice, etc…

In short, once you know why the “stray dog” won’t leave, you can make small steps and change your current practices (habits) and replace them with others.

Plus, if you add strength training, you will lose body-fat and improve your body fat percentage which will make you look amazing in a swimsuit!
