Is your energy being drained and making you feel stuck?

Is clutter keeping you down?

I am keeping me down. My desk right now is a mess. slowly and surely random items have been appearing there and I’ve just been letting them be. One coffee cup here, one sheet of notebook paper with some notes that I need there. And before I  new it. There was a deflated soccer ball and a pump to pump up the ball. Are you kidding me?

But guess what? I haven’t done anything about it yet. Why? Cuz I don’t feel like it :-). The problem is all these little items have slowly Clutter my desk and now it’s a mess and it’s causing me to have less energy and feel a little drained and stuck.

I need to get unstuck, you likely need to get unstuck, and let’s be honest everyone can use more energy right!

So I did some digging, “research” if you will and this is kind of a synopsis of what I discovered on how I can declutter my life and how you can do the same by following the advice below we will acquire some more energy :-). Which would be a huge bonus!

Basically, there are two primary forms of clutter that sabotage and drain your energy. The first is physical clutter in the second is mental clutter.

Clutter is super stealthy innature. It establishes itself slowly and under the radar. A lot of times we don’t even consciously see it and when we finally do it’s overwhelming. Here’s the thing, this clutter oftentimes saps your creativity, your productivity, and your energy. Ultimately this affects your health and well-being.

Physical Clutter

Physical clutter has to do with your physical environment. Often times this can be seen in your car, your kitchen, your office desk (my current situation),  maybe your garage, I think you get the point.

Oftentimes, this unorganized and unkept stuff just gets in the way. You often have to step over it, you have to move it back and forth, I think you get the picture. It just sits there takes up space that could be used for other things or space that could just be empty and give you a little bit of peace of mind.

When you live surrounded by clutter, whether you notice it or not, it kind of pulls you down and chokes you out and keeps you from gaining momentum. In short, your subconscious sees it and this is like having a slow leaking faucet, it just kind of drains you, whether you realize it or not. The end result is you have less energy for fitness and for your loved ones help. NOT GOOD!

Mental Clutter

Mental clutter has to do with the patterns of your thinking, and how you react to yourself and others on a day-to-day basis. Once again, just like physical clutter it works under the radar which is why it’s quote-unquote stealthy.

Mental clutter often reveals itself in self-defeating ways, like how you think about yourself, how you behave to certain people, ways you always react to certain situations or just how you approach life.

The danger is living this way blind you. You aren’t really living, you just kind of exist. Often times you don’t even see options are alternatives to thinking or reacting differently. This in turn chokes off your creativity and you become stagnant…which means your energy levels drops…

So what can you do about it?

Whether it’s physical clutter in your garage or mental clutter because of that same person who always bugs you and raises your blood pressure, you can start to work on it today :-).

Here are some things that you can try to get your energy back and improve your physical and mental clutter.

Physical Clutter

  1. Assess your home and your work environment. Identify an area that you want to get a clutter-free. Then go around and physically touch each and every item in it. Yes, I know this sounds weird. The reason you do thks is because often times we are so used to that object or item being there that we don’t really see it. Just follow the instructions touch every item please :-).
  2. Now, ask yourself the following questions.  Why do I have it? What is it? Why do I have it? Does this make my life better? Does it make someone else life better? Is it trash? The goal is to try to eliminate as much as you can.
  3. The next step is to ask someone you trust to come in and go through the stuff again when you are finished. This way you’ll get a new fresh perspective and hopefully your friend will be objective.
  4. Lastly, think really hard the next time you’re tempted to just acquire more things and stuff. In addition, try to remove something from your space each time you bring something new in. Basically, out with the old, in with the new. This will make getting new stuff and getting rid of old stuff more meaningful and purposeful.

Mental Clutter

  1. Step one, SLOW DOWN! To really get a handle on mental clutter you really need to slow down and try to pay attention.
  2. You’ll need to ask yourself this question several times a day. “ Do I have other options?”  Whether that means rushing one more time again to work or having to deal with that same annoying person who just seems to push your buttons. I want you to stop for a quick second and kind of brainstorm up one or two other options. Think, don’t just react.
  3. Also, I highly suggest you set several reminders throughout your day to access what you’re really doing and whether it’s really necessary.  Are you checking Facebook for the 12th time of the day? Are you having the same dead-end conversation with the same person over and over again? Are you dwelling on the past? I use Google Calendar to set reminders and it works great!
  4. Next assess your daily routines.  What do you habitually do in the morning, lunch, late afternoon, right before bedtime, Etc. In short what are your habits? Are they productive, destructive, are they just time-wasters?  Then identify ways you can make them better.
  5. Lastly, and this is the big one, are you procrastinating? If there’s a dreaded task that needs to get done and you keep avoiding it, it will slowly and surely drain your energy and your productivity. The simple, but not easy way to deal with this is to create a list of tasks you have been putting off… and to GET THEM DONE! Please trust me when I say it will make you feel a lot better and your energy levels will go up as soon as you see the momentum in the task getting completed.

Right, wrong, or indifferent, part of being healthy and fit is about being intentional with both your physical environment and your mental clutter. This encompasses your schedule and your relationships. So please, with a cherry on top, take some time and start making deliberate steps to live more intentionally and better. In doing so, you will require more energy and live a happier healthier life.

Go be awesome!
