The Liver?

I know you’re super excited about today’s topic :-). After all, everyone is talking about the liver and how important it is right?

Ok…we both know that’s a lie.

Your liver does not command much attention in any industry and truth be told…it isn’t very sexy. However, if you want to have a healthy long life you should know a few things about your liver. So, if you are interested in living as long and as healthy as possible continue reading. If not, stop reading and go back to your normal business :-)…(I really didn’t mean that, keep reading).

Why is the liver important?

Well for starters, the liver is the Old English word for “life.” Apparently way back in the day, at least somebody thought the liver was important, because they named it after life. Besides livers word origins, it performs an amazing array of functions. I’m just going to list a few.

  • Produces proteins
  • Regulates fat storage
  • Cleanses the blood
  • Controls blood sugar
  • Helps metabolize fat
  • Helps produce energy

I think we can all agree that those functions are pretty important. However, if toxins overwhelm the liver its performancer can suffer. And as a direct result…you too will suffer.

If the liver cannot cleanse and get rid of the toxins that are in the body your immune system can get damaged. Which can lead to autoimmune diseases…such as arthritis.

Obviously that’s not good.

To make matters worse, if you’re liver becomes overwhelmed with toxins it can become difficult to control your weight. Because as you have learned, your liver is at least partially responsible for  your metabolism, your ability to store fat, and your blood sugar, which all vitally important for maintaining a healthy weight. So, if your liver becomes overwhelmed, a byproduct of that can be weight gain.

Those are just two ways that if your liver becomes overwhelmed or toxic it can have a negative effect on your well-being. I could list many others, but I’m not going to. What I am going to do is talk about  the causes of a toxic liver.

 

What are some causes of a toxic liver?

Everyday your liver’s primary purpose is to rid the body of toxins. The problem occurs when it becomes overwhelmed with too many toxins. Toxins can come in the form of pesticides, environmental substances such as impure water and pollution, medications, alcohol, large amounts of animal fat, artificial sweeteners, so on and so forth. As you can see, it’s really easy for your liver to be subjugated to a lot of toxins.

 

We need to help our livers out.

I get it, there’s really no escaping some of these toxins, however there are things we can do to lighten the load and make it easier on our liver, so that it doesn’t become overwhelmed. Here are two things you can do to help detoxify it.

  1. Exercise :-)! Obviously I’m a little biased on this one, that’s why I ranked at number one. But when you exercise it helps your circulatory system. Your circulatory system helps all of your organs perform better, which includes your liver. When your circulation is firing on all cylinders it increases blood flow, this increased blood flow then delivers extra nutrients and oxygen to all parts of your body. A good rule of thumb is to aim for at least 30 minutes of exercise each day. This can include just simply walking. Which is what I encourage a lot of my clients to do in between weight training sessions.
  2. Your diet. Yes, everyone just frowned and wrinkle their noses because nobody likes to talk about diet. However it’s important. When it comes to your liver try to eliminate artificial sweeteners, overly processed foods, pesticides, excess animal fat, basically all the things that I mentioned above. You should eat food that is quote-unquote natural. The less processed the better, if it comes out of a box or was pre-packaged the chances of it having a whole bunch of extra stuff, “toxins” is pretty high.

So, the liver doesn’t get a lot of attention, but if you take care of it, it will pay huge dividends long-term. All that said, I greatly encouraged you to take me up on the tips above.
